Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the House, is my HERO !

In the last 2 weeks Nancy Pelosi and the House of Representatives Democrats have passed a number of bills detailed below:

HR 8373 - Right to Contraception Act - this bill that protects an individual's ability to access contraceptives, engage in contraception, and protects a health care provider's ability to provide contraceptives, contraception, and information related to contraception.

HR 8404 - Respect for Marriage Act - this bill protects same-sex and interracial marriages.

HR 8296 - Women's Health Protection Act of 2022 - Prohibits federal, state, and local governmental restrictions on the provision of, and access to, abortion services

HR 8297 - Ensuring Access to Abortion Act of 2022 - this bill that prohibits anyone acting under state law from interfering with a person's ability to access out-of-state abortion services.

HR 6538 - Active Shooter Alert Act of 2022 - this bill that requires a designated officer of the Department of Justice act as the national coordinator of an Active Shooter Alert Communications Network regarding an emergency involving an active shooter.

Of course, the grand majority of House Republicans voted NO to these bills (including Ben Cline voting NO) and their extreme positions opposing common sense legislation (and supported by a large majority of Americans) are now on record.  Unfortunately, these bills will likely not advance in the Senate.

Pointing at the Republicans, Nancy Pelosi also said the following:

“Let us be clear: Those that oppose this legislation are only

revealing their dark desire to punish and control America’s most

intimate and personal decisions. . . .What is this about? They are

against birth control, but they are for controlling women. This is

about servitude.”

“I ask those who oppose contraception, again, do you even know what’s

going on in your own families? Why don’t you ask? Do we need a session

of the birds and bees to talk about why this is important?”

Don’t mess with Nancy !

Vote like your pants are on fire !

I have been angry, sad, demoralized, frustrated and now ENERGIZED !  Let’s take a deep breath …. This is the first topical blog post from the Staunton Democratic Committee (SDC).  We will try to publish and discuss a specific topic weekly and detail what you can do locally and nationally to counter the threats to our democracy, personal freedoms and values.   Many of these issues are intertwined so please bear with me. Where to start ?  Clearly many people (including myself) are very angry about some of the most recent Supreme Court rulings such as Dobbs 1 (Roe), West Virginia v. EPA 2 , etc.  But initially I want to talk about voting (including voter suppression and election subversion) and why the rest of our progressive agenda depends on 2 pieces of Democrat sponsored election legislation blocked by Republicans in Congress. Consider the current US Congress.  Democrats currently have a slim majority in the House and a technical majority (the 51 st vote is the Vice President in case

He Who Shall Not Be Named plans for the future

Per the Washington Post article , in his next term, He Who Shall Not Be Named (Trump) wants to: Execute drug dealers Move homeless people to outlying ‘tent cities’ Deploy federal forces against crime, unrest and protests Strip job protections for federal workers Eliminate the Education Department Restrict voting to one day using paper ballots First, I had a bit of a chuckle then it occurred to me that he probably really believes this and the smile really fell right off of my face after realizing that most of his followers also believe it is a good idea.   Not only are these points awful from a policy perspective but they are each an insidious part of his plan to not only rile up his base but to eliminate resistance and focus power in his hands.   Let's look a little deeper at each point and dive into the subsequent effects of these "policies". Execute drug dealers - his thought (probably from a hero movie he watched) is that permanently removing drug dealers from the gen
